Historical - Wall of the Farmers-General Place d’Italie
Originally, this wall was built as a place to collect taxes for goods coming into Paris during the late 1700’s. It once circled Paris and there were 47 gates and 16 collected taxes, but today just four remain. While it raised a great deal of revenue, it caused much consternation amongst the locals, particularly the peasants. In 1789, they had enough and during an uprising destroyed many of the tollgates; however, the taxes were not removed until 1791.
