The history of the Berlin Wall originates from the end of World War II when Germany was divided into four quarters to be managed by the four world powers, Great Britain, the U.S., France, and the Soviet Union. The city of Berlin, the capital of the Third Reich, was also divided. After the war millions of East Germans crossed the border into West Germany, passing through West Berlin to do so, drawn there for the economic opportunities on offer. West Berliners also took the opportunity to travel to East Berlin as prices were considerably lower there. The loss of labor damaged East Berlin and the Soviet Union and in 1961 The Berlin Wall was erected. The wall stood as a barrier for over 25 years, before re-opening in 1989 paving the way for German reunification. Tourists and sightseers have chipped off parts of the wall as souvenirs, some of the only parts remaining are at the East Side Gallery. Be sure to visit the former location of the infamous Checkpoint Charlie where the Berlin Wall Museum is located.
