Duesseldorf Guide

As one of Germany's biggest cities, Dusseldorf has a major impact on the entire world. The city is known for its fashion, fine arts, events, carnival, nightlife, and vibrant business scene and functions as an international financial and business centre. .

Duesseldorf has an abundance of hotels to suit all budgets and tastes. Prices typically increase during major trade fairs and it is essential to book well ahead at these times. Room rates tend to be more stable in the holiday season and are cheaper during the weekends.

Top Attractions in Duesseldorf

There is no better place to see Dusseldorf than from the Rhine Tower. At the top, you will find a revolving gourmet restaurant. Not only is the food fantastic, but so are the views you'll get of the entire city!

If you want to spend some time feeling like one of the rich and famous, head to Koenigsallee. This affluent area is chock full of virtually every high-end store that you can imagine! And, even if you are travelling on a tight budget and can't afford a shopping spree, Koenigsallee is still a fun place to window shop.

For a taste of some of Dusseldorf's history, make a visit to Schloss Benrath - a palace that has was built back in the 18th century, but is now used as a museum. Inside, you can see the palace's original furniture and artwork.

History can also be found just northeast of Dusseldorf in Ratingen. The town was founded back in the 800's and still holds much of its historic charm. Today, though, it is also home to a number of international corporations.

For a more laid-back experience, head to the Dusseldorf suburb of Niederkassel. Located right on the banks of the Rhine River, it is the perfect place for a waterside stroll.

Eating

Bolkerstrasse is a pedestrian street in the centre of the old town that has restaurants and bars on both sides of the road; in fact it has been named the longest 'bar' in world.

Zum Schiffchen is a pub that is over 380 years old and lays claim to being possibly the oldest pub/restaurant in Duesseldorf. It proudly counts Napoleon as one of its guests.

Events

Every July there is a nine-day funfair, known as Kirmes, which is held on the banks of the River Rhine. Visitors and locals enjoy various rides, including a Ferris wheel and roller coasters and most definitely a beer garden; watermelons are also sold everywhere. On the Monday, the gay community celebrates 'Pink Monday' and on the Friday, there is a fireworks display. The fair attracts over an incredible four million people. The Duesseldorf Marathon is held in May every year and is open to everyone.
