Budapest Guide

As Hungary's capital city, Budapest offers plenty to see and do. Many reviews rate it one of the most delightful cities in Europe, as Budapest offers parks that are relaxing, museums that inspire and a vibrant nightlife. The city contains 23 numbered districts, and it is actually made up of two cities - Buda, on the west bank of the Danube River, and Pest, on the east bank. No matter which side appeals to you, there are plenty of hotels in Budapest to choose from.

Top attractions in Budapest

For the ultimate in relaxation, head to the Rudas Baths. Constructed in 1566, the Rudas Baths are Turkish baths that were built when the Turks occupied Hungary. Inside, there are pools of all different temperatures, saunas, and plenty of places to stop and get a massage. For many tourists, bathing is the main reason for visiting Budapest.

If you want to sample some of the local goodies, start with the wine. Most people don't know it, but Hungary is home to tons of wineries. Right in the middle of Buda's castle district, you will find the Faust Wine Cellar. Inside, there are more than 80 Hungarian wines to choose from! And if you get hungry, there are plenty of Hungarian treats to nibble on.

Right in the middle of Budapest, you won't be able to help but notice St. Stephen's Basilica. This huge church can hold more than 8,000 people. At the top, there is a 300-foot dome that is chock full of different colours.

From the Danube River, you can see everything that both Buda and Pest have to offer. Amazingly, they both have very different landscapes. Buda is very hilly, while Pest is completely flat. On an evening cruise down the Danube, you can take it all in, along with plenty of food and drink.

A visit to a coffeehouse is a tradition that should be on the agenda of every traveller.

Arts and Entertainment

Every August the Sziget Festival attracts crowds of holidaymakers, hippies and rock fans. The festival features a multitude of musical, cultural and culinary events, great acts and cheap beer. Camping privileges are included in the festival passes that permit sleeping under the night sky in a tent. The Spring Festival normally takes place towards late March. Tickets can be purchased online in advance; they range from weekly, five-day, day or VIP.

Budapest Hotels

There is a wide choice of Budapest accommodation that can be found in a variety of price categories. They start from the cheap hotels in Budapest to well-appointed five-star accommodation. The cost of staying in Budapest is markedly higher than in other towns and cities in Hungary, with the most expensive accommodation being at Castle Hill. The area also offers backpacker type of hostels. The quality of air is better in Buda because it is closer to the forests and hills.
