Thyssen Bornemisza Museum

Paseo del Prado, 8, 28014, Madrid, Spain

Thyssen Bornemisza Museum is located in Madrid, Spain and is considered amongst the city’s main attraction , with visitors from all over Spain and other countries.

Along with the Prado and Reina Sofia, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum makes up Madrid's Golden Triangle of Art. The artworks displayed at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum come from a private collection started by Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza in 1920. Long on display in his villa in Switzerland, the works came on the market in the 1980s. The baron was married to a former Miss Spain and she successfully campaigned for Spain to buy the collection. In 1992, the museum was opened.

The paintings in the Thyssen are arranged in chronological order in a succession of 48 rooms over three floors. This allows visitors to view a sequence of European painting from the 13th through to the 20th century. At the heart of the collection are 700 canvases by such luminaries as El Greco, Velázquez, Dürer, Rembrandt, Watteau, Canaletto, Caravaggio, Hals, Memling, and Goya.
