Basel Guide

Basel is one of the top historical and cultural centres in Switzerland. There are several interesting historical buildings to see, as well as good museums to visit. The selection of places to stay includes both boutique-style hotels, and hostels that are especially ideal for backpackers. Many of the hotels are quite well-known for their unusual features. One of the things that guests can expect from most hotels in the area is a beautiful Alpine view.

Top Places to Visit

See the Dreilandereck, which is where the borders of Switzerland, Germany and France join at the Rhine. This is a very interesting sight to see.

Visit the State Archives building, which is found in a medieval mansion with beautiful architecture. This is a great location from the medieval period.

The Munster is a cathedral built in both Gothic and Romanesque style that dates back to medieval times. It's open to the public.

Basel Hotels

Basel accommodation includes both hostels and a number of unusual hotels. The hostels are good cheap establishments in Basel to consider, as most have single and double rooms in addition to dormitory rooms. Amongst the mid-range hotels is a converted jail with a number of the other hotels being boutique-style. Upmarket options include hotels with individually-designed rooms, fine restaurants and parking garages. Visitors can easily choose the hotel that suits their needs the best.

Historical Landmarks

Basel is famous for its beautiful historical buildings that date back to medieval times. The Munster, or cathedral, is one of the city's focal points and also features its own square. Another interesting church to see is the Elisabethen, the 19th century Protestant church that was the first to be constructed after the Reformation. The Rathaus, or Town Hall, features beautiful Renaissance architecture, and the 14th century city gates still stand.
