Blackpool in review
On England's northwest coast, Blackpool has been the UK's leisure capital since the mid-19th century. Back then the Lancashire mill owners would shut up shop for a week of repairs every summer and the workers inevitably trickled down to Blackpool to soak their weary bodies in the Irish Sea. The town's holiday glow grew all the brighter when, in 1879, it became the first municipality in the world to install electric street lighting. Today, the Blackpool Promenade's colourful displays are as irresistible a drawcard as ever before. The fun continues at the Pleasure Beach theme park, where you can scare yourself silly on Europe's tallest and fastest roller-coaster. As you'd expect of a seaside resort, accommodation is easy to find. The town's official website claims Blackpool has more hotels, hostels and B&B beds than the whole of Portugal.
