Bellver Castle

Castell de Bellver in Catalan is a circular castle perched on a hill about two miles from Palma de Mallorca. It was constructed in the 14th century for King James II of Aragon but later took on the grim role of a prison, first a military prison during the 18th and 19th centuries, and later during the Spanish Civil War to incarcerate people loyal to the Republican cause. Now that those dark days are gone, the castle is one of Mallorca's main tourist attractions.
