Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor)
|
Pariser Platz 1, 10117 Mitte, Berlin, Germany
The Brandenburg Gate is located on the border between East and West Berlin at the Pariser Platz and stands as a reminder of how the city was once divided. Originally it was the main entrance to the east of the city that was surrounded by a high wall. Since the wall was pulled down in 1989, the Gate has become a symbol of Germany's reunification and the area around the gate has seen a lot of recent developments recovering some of its 19th century splendor. Brandenburg Gate was designed by Carl Gotthard and built between 1778 and 1791; of particular interest are the scenes from Greek mythology and the quadriga of victory crowning the gate. It has seen numerous marches and parades pass under its arch, including the jubilant march in 1871 when Prussia was victorious over the French and when the German Empire was founded. The Berlin garrison passed ceremonially through the Gate as the First World War begun, and in 1933 the storm troopers held a giant torchlight parade here on its way to Wilhelmstrasse to celebrate Hitler's rise to power.
