Edinburgh Castle, Johnston Terrace, Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh, UK
From its perch on Castle Rock, this doughty stronghold has dominated the city since Edinburgh became the Capital of Scotland in 1437. As befitting a castle the Edinburgh Castle of today has a strong association with the military. It's HQ for the Royal Regiment of Scotland and 52 Infantry Brigades and houses the regimental museum of the Royal Scots and Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. In fact the castle's governor has always been head of the Scottish army. To the front of the castle is a forecourt called the Esplanade. Here the renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place each August. There are many things to see inside including the royal apartments of the Stewart monarchs, the Great Hall and the Crown Room, home to the Scottish Crown Jewels and Regalia. You should allow 2 hours for the full experience. Also, don’t miss a grand tradition at the castle - the firing of the One O’clock Gun which allows people in earshot to set their clocks and watches.
