One of Barcelona's most intriguing shopping destinations, La Boqueria (Mercat de la Boqueria) is the city's central market with an ancient history and a very diverse selection of goods, mainly foodstuffs. References to a Boqueria market date back to the early 13th century when tables were set up at the old city gates to sell meat. Over the centuries, it developed into the city's premier fruit and vegetable market. Nowadays it's one of Barcelona's leading attractions for its atmosphere as well as its restaurants, cafes and tapas bars. It also features cabarets and various performances.
