Milan Cathedral (Duomo)

This stunning Gothic cathedral in Piazza del Duomo in the centre of Milan took five centuries to complete. Construction of fourth-largest church in the world was started by the ruling Visconti family in 1386. The numbers are impressive. Its vast interior, bathed in the light from its stained glass windows, can seat 40000. It has five aisles, 52 columns, 135 marble spires, and over 3400 statues flanking the exterior. Mark Twain was suitably impressed "What a wonder it is! So grand, so solemn, so vast! And yet so delicate, so airy, so graceful!"
