Near the Doge's Palace stands the equally impressive Basilica Di San Marco, a place of spiritual and imperial stature. Work originally started in 828 for this building to house the body of St Mark. It was rebuilt several times with the final version based on the Church of the Twelve Apostles in Constantinople. It became Venice’s cathedral in 1807.
