The ancient hilltop church of San Miniato al Monte is one of the city's few religious buildings to remain intact. The church was dedicated to San Miniato, an early Christian martyr. The church was begun in 1023 on the site of shrine erected in the 4th century. San Miniato is distinguished by its beautiful marble facade. The bronze eagle above the facade is the emblem of the Arte di Calimala guild responsible for the construction. The area above the central window features a mosaic of Christ between the Madonna and St. Miniato that was added in the 13th century.
