St Mary's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral on King’s Island in Limerick. Historically known as Limerick Cathedral, St Mary’s is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. St Mary’s dates back to 1168 which makes it Limerick’s oldest building. The Cistercian architecture has a simple beauty and you can usually find a docent to act as a guide. The interior has many attractions including a pre-Reformation limestone altar, the Leper's Squint (a slit in the wall through which lepers could observe the service, and the reardos of the High Altar. The bells of St Mary’s Cathedral play a major role in the New Year's celebrations in Limerick.
