Welcome to Copenhagen
Copenhagen was founded nearly 1,000 years ago when a Danish Bishop built a fortress there. Today, Copenhagen is the biggest city in Denmark and the home of the Danish Parliament.
In Copenhagen, there are no glittery skylines or the high-stressed hustle and bustle that is normally seen in other cities. A multitude of bikes move along at a leisurely pace in the many bicycle lanes that are found here and pedestrian streets smell of fresh baked bread. Copenhagen is a fairly compact and eminently bikeable and walkable city. Many hotels can be found in or nearby Centrum, often within walking distances of the prime thoroughfares and tourist sights.
Top Attractions in Copenhagen
When you look at a map of Copenhagen, you will see that there is plenty of water around the city - as Copenhagen boasts a number of canals. In fact, the suburbs are all connected by bridges. If you're really into the water, check out New Harbour. Right in the middle of town, New Harbour is full of boat tours that will give you a great look at all of the city's sights, along with a detailed description of the city's history.
The statue of the Little Mermaid perches atop a rock in the harbour and is one of the most photographed and visited sites in the world. The sculpture was created in 1909 and was presented to Copenhagen city in 1913 by Carl Jacobsen. The sculptor was Edvard Erikson and on 23rd August every year, women can be seen jumping into the water around the Little Mermaid to commemorate her birthday. The statue can be viewed from the shore or on the water, as part of a canal tour.
Also near the centre of town is the National Museum. Inside, you will learn everything there is to know about Danish history. You will even get to check out medieval treasures and ancient Viking artefacts. And, as an added benefit, it's completely free to tour the museum!
Rosenborg Castle is a Renaissance style building that was constructed in 1606. At that time it was the residence of the Danish royals, but today it is a museum showcasing Denmark's cultural history.
Amalienborg is the official Danish royal residence and features four classical rococo styled palaces. Visitors can tour the palace rooms and view the Crown jewels.
The Tivoli Gardens is an amusement park that was built in 1843. It features a wooden roller coaster, a pantomime theatre and a concert hall, which guarantees an unforgettable day for the entire family.
Once you work up a good thirst, take a trip over to the Carlsberg Brewery. When you tour the facility, you will get to learn all about brewing and what makes Copenhagen's beer different from other beers around the world. And at the end of your tour, you'll get to take part in a full tasting.
If you are looking for some fun outside the city, head to Vesterbro, a popular Copenhagen suburb. Located just west of city centre, Vesterbro used to be separated from Copenhagen by a moat. Today, it's just an easy trip through a gate. Vesterbro is home to several theatres and nightclubs - making it the perfect place to catch a concert.
Copenhagen accommodation offers plenty of options that range from budget to five-star hotels. Rates are fairly high though and rooms are rather small. The cheap hotels in Copenhagen will normally only have a shower, but there are hotel rooms with both a bathtub and shower; preferences must be stated when booking. Many existing establishments have undergone recent expansion and renovation and emphasise sustainable and eco-friendly business practices.
