Biarritz Guide - Spend Less, Do More

Welcome To Biarritz

Biarritz-coastal-Panorama-on-a-sunny-dayYou're in Biarritz - armed with your chilled champagne and ready to celebrate your temporary freedom from the hum drum of your day to day, you bask in the glow of the glorious summer mansion retreats and the posh restaurants, dreaming of how wonderful it would be to just tear up the plane ticket home and move here. You've visited the luxurious Hotel du Palais, the historical sea-side palace of the Empress Eugenia and Napoleon III and symbol of the city, and got a taste of the noble life. Shall we say, how very bourgeois - there is a reason it is known to be the 'queen of resorts and resort of kings'.

While you are touring the symbolic buildings of Biarritz, you visited the spectacular Casino Municipal, with its theater and swimming pool, and people watched as you marveled at the beautiful architecture. But there is so much more to Biarritz than the glitz and the glamour of the high life. This is one of those cities where laid back pizza joints and family owned surf shops co-exist side-by-side with the upscale restaurants. Sit on a street corner eating croissants with apricot jam and drinking cafes crèmes.

Legend has it…

Biarritz-Grand-Plage-Beach-panoramaThere was once a ship in trouble as a huge storm hit rendering it impossible for it to navigate to port. This was rather a predicament; however, just as hope was about to be lost, a ray of light shined down and guided the ship safely to shore. The fisherman decided to erect a statue in tribute to the 'virgin of the rock' who saved them. If you couldn't make it to the Eiffel Tower, why not take a sunrise or sunset stroll along the Eiffel Bridge which connects the mainland to the Rock of the Virgin? It's designed by the same guy, Gustave Eiffel! If you get all the way to the end, you will be rewarded by sweeping ocean views - on a clear day, you'll even catch glimpses of the mountains of the Spanish Basque Country.

Instead of eating out…

Why not go the DIY route and head over to the 'Halles de Biarritz', the main covered marketplace where you will find all the fresh local produce you need to concoct the most simple or extravagant of home-made meals. Sometimes, preparing a meal with your nearest and dearest is adventure enough after a day of exploring outdoors. Between the two buildings, one for fish and the other dedicated to fruit, vegetables, meat, bread and other Basque specialties, you will find plenty of options to satisfy every tastebud.

You've been so great with budgeting so far…

Especially on accommodation, so why not splash out? Reward yourself with a trip to one of those fancy spas! Why? Because you're worth it. While you're at it, why not make a day trip out of it, hire a car, and leave the wild surf beaches of Biarritz behind to get a taste of something a little more relaxed? In the sleepy spa town of Eugenie-les-Bains, you'll find the simple elegance and beauty of the lush mountain landscapes enlivening your every sense. At the rustic La Ferme Thermale, enjoy the thermal baths, fireplaces and organic teas. Once you are blissed out, retreat to the gardens for a zen evening of champagne, candlelight and perhaps Michelin stars (three of them, if you're counting) if you decide to pay a visit to Michael Guérard's gastronomic wonder. Get lost in this paradise in the heart of France's Basque Country. And ladies and gentleman, that is one way to do it. Back to basics, but with the class of French royalty. What divinity feels like!
