Welcome to Rione Monti

Rione-Monti-Basilica-di-Santa-Maria-MaggioreEven though it’s one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Rome, this charming area has moved with the times and is known for having an array of hip bars, inexpensive restaurants, boutiques and is a popular place to mix and mingle with the locals. But while the area is mostly recognised as one of Rome’s hubs of art and fashion there is also a lot more to offer a curious tourist in terms of historic buildings and architecture which are well worth a closer look after you’ve visited the Colosseum. This neighbourhood is perhaps best described as a place where old meets new given the juxtaposition between ancient ruins and modern hotspots.

Start your day with a cappuccino…

Er Caffettiere is a great place to have affordable coffee and croissants. With friendly service and a tasty variety of accompanying treats you will surely be able to satiate your appetite for a full day of activity ahead. Afterwards, embark on a walking tour of this cobblestoned area. Some of the highlights you may see include two of the four major basilica churches, Santa Maria Maggiore and the oldest Basilica in the world, St. John Lateran Archbasilica. Other architectural points of interest include the remains of the Ludus Magnus, once considered one of the great Gladiatorial Training Schools in Rome.

Rione_Monti-Archbasilica-of-saint-john-LateranIf you prefer a more structured and current adventure, perhaps a pizza themed walking tour might be to your taste where you will learn about the art of pizza making while enjoying a scenic trip through the area. The samples and snacks you will receive along the way are sure to be one of some of the most exciting of your day. Also while on your walking tour be sure to stop by the urban market MercatoMonti where you will find a wide range of designer clothing and vintage items. Or if you are tempted to try the local organic produce in this area head to Mia Market. The ice cream here is regarded as some of the best in the city and the cookies are also a highlight.

For further taste temptations…

Head to Zia Rosetta for a traditional Roman sandwich, a rosetta stuffed with delicious fresh ingredients, Aromaticus which is particularly popular with vegetarians but also serves a selection of dishes made with meat, Alle Carrette, an old-school style pizzeria which has been serving loyal locals for several decades, or perhaps Trattoria Monti which is widely regarded as one of the best trattorias in Rome.

Rione Monte by night…

If you feel like exploring the nightlife, try the always bustling wine bar Ai Tre Scalini. Always popular with locals, this hotspot is almost always packed in the evenings. If you are looking for a venue that is young and cool one good option is Black Market which hosts everything from live DJ sets to unplugged sessions and Indie Rock concerts. Other options include Ice Club for a fun experience which as the name suggests is a bar made completely out of ice and the Colosseum Pub Crawl where you can meet new people on an organised tour hosted by friendly and welcoming staff.
