Culver City Guide - Spend Less, Do More

Welcome to Culver City

Culver-City-Skyline-at-NightYou've jostled your way through the crowds in Hollywood, and entertained every tourist temptation along the famous star-lined street. You've cruised the boardwalks in Venice, but found it to be losing some of its alternative vibes to the mainstream.

North Hollywood was a little far out of the way and you weren't sure if you wanted to brave the notorious 101 free way north during rush hour – does anyone even go over the hills? For something low-key, and rich with culture, you turn to Culver City, the filming location of classics such as Gone With the Wind, Grease and The Wizard of Oz.

How about some theatre?

When people think of LA, often the glitz and the glamour of film and TV come to mind. But you would be surprised to hear about the caliber of the theatre here. You can't go past the Kirk Douglas Theatre with its $8 million renovation and their top-notch concierges. It is the perfect place to catch a show.

Do as the locals do…

And head over to the Corner Door for some quality comfort food - think pasta, fish and chips, and the like. Squeeze into a cozy booth or hang at the bar at happy hour. Open till late, if you love dark wood and bare brick walls, the ambience is perfect for an evening of good food and company.

Consider yourself an art connoisseur?

You can't go past a visit to Thinkspace Gallery, an integral part of Culver City's support of their young and emerging artists. With works on display by a huge array of up and coming talent, you will be sure to see some wonderful contemporary pieces. This cutting edge gallery prides itself as a catalyst for the art movement for the generation. Drop by when you have a leisurely afternoon off, or attend one of their scheduled special events!

Or maybe just a cheese connoisseur…

Consider heading over to Wheel House Cheese for all your cheesy needs. There, you will find a truly impressive array of cheeses, some of which cannot be found anywhere else in Los Angeles. You can purchase a personalized cheese platter to share with some friends or attend one of their educational events which they hold on their very cute back patio. These range from cheese pairings to 'Cheese 101' classes, and at these, you can expect to be treated to cheeses and meats among a few other things.

In need of a drink?

Perhaps it is time to pay the Blind Barber a visit - not for a haircut mind you, but as this Prohibition era style speakeasy bar can only be accessed through a non-descript door at the back of a barber shop, a haircut during daytime hours is definitely an option. Don't worry, the barbers working there are most definitely not blind. Why not book in trim or a shave and finish off your day with a “Sweeney Ted”?

If a studio tour is more your thing…

Culver City happens to be the home of Sony Pictures Studios. You've saved on accommodation, so you’ve earned this one! Formerly known as MGM studios, you can embark on a two-hour walking tour journey. No two tours are exactly the same, which is fantastic, as it means every time you step foot on the lot will be an adventure. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time though, as tours tend to book out, and you wouldn't want to miss it.
