Hollywood Guide - Spend Less, Do More

Welcome to Hollywood

Hollywood-Sunset-with-Sign-on-hillSo you've joined the tourist hordes on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You've posed with the character impersonators. Mr Incredible and Cat Woman seemed remarkably down to earth as they wandered up and down Hollywood Boulevard. You've stood in the footsteps of your favorite celebrities, and watched your daughter squeal as she sees a tribute to her favorite sparkling vampire series immortalized in the concrete out front of the famed Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

You've even gone to Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum, as the obligatory photo with the character impersonators was just not enough. But what about the locals? You won't find them here, but we can tell you where you will find them - and if you're lucky, maybe you'll even spot a celebrity or two.

Instead of hiking up to the sign in the blazing sun…

Why not head up to the Griffith Observatory at sunset with a rug and some light snacks? On a clear night, the stars are spectacular, as well as the sweeping views over all of 'The City of Angels' in all its glory, with its twinkling lights. The free public telescopes which are available on clear nights until 9:45pm only sweeten the deal.

For less than the price of a movie ticket…

Hollywood-Boulevard-Street-SignMake sure to catch a comedy show at either the Upright Citizen's Brigade or IO West to watch some of LA's best improv or sketch teams perform. Follow in the footsteps of the likes of Tina Fey and other favorite comedians who used these training grounds as a place to experiment and hone their craft.

If you're an Amy Poehler fan, you'll be pleased to find out that she was a founding member of UCB. Not only can you watch, you can also join in on certain nights. Not quite up to that yet? No problem, both places run classes which take you from the basics of improv through to the advanced. And maybe you'll even learn something about the aspiring actors that call Hollywood their home.

How about some exercise?

You are in Los Angeles after all. Grab a bike or strap on your favorite pair of hiking shoes and head over to Lake Hollywood. So, it’s really more of a reservoir than a lake, but we like to call it a lake. If you are there in the early morning, you can often spot a myriad of local wildlife ranging from deer to hummingbirds. The landscape takes on a rather mystical appeal in the early morning mist. Compared to some of the steeper terrain in the area, it is an easy hike with the ground mostly flat. Stand on the bridge and look out at the sheer vastness of the landscape as the Los Angeles sun beams down upon you.

Need a drink?

Head over to one of many speakeasies in the area. We wouldn't want to ruin the surprise, but we really have to say, top marks for creative entrances. A few suggestions are Davey Wayne's, if boozy snow cones are a thing you would enjoy - entrance through what looks like a garage sale. If you love attention to detail, another popular option is No Vacancy - on weekends enjoy a colorful show every hour.

You've saved on your accommodation…

So why not splash out on a concert at the Hollywood Bowl? One way to do it is to go for the bleacher seats and bring a picnic and wine! Here, with the Hollywood Hills looming in the distance and those famous white-washed letters spelling out your location, you will truly feel as though you are experiencing the real heart of Tinseltown.
