Westwood Guide – Spend Less, Do More

Welcome to Westwood

Westwood-District-PanoramaWelcome to Westwood, Los Angeles! Tucked in between the two of Los Angeles's swankiest neighborhoods in Brentwood and the celebrated Beverly Hills, this trendy neighborhood revolves around the famous UCLA campus. But you don't have to be a college student to enjoy the thrills on offer in Westwood (though we ain't going to lie, a college connection does help).

A visit to Westwood starts with its history – and there's nothing more historical than Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. As you stroll through the grounds, you were astonished by the famous tombstones you came across – Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, Don Knotts and Burt Lancaster to name a few. After that, you were still in a history buff sort of mood, so you decided to visit the old part of UCLA campus where the architectural monument of Royce Hall provided the perfect backdrop for your next Instagram selfie. You could be forgiven for thinking Westwood is stuck in the past, but there's plenty to do in this vibrant enclave in the present day!

They say you don't get rich by not eating

Westwood-War-CemetryLuckily you won't spend a fortune either in Westwood – the neighborhood of cheap eats! Perennial college student favourite is Diddy Riese Cookies. This small, unassuming store has an enormous line most nights of the week, but the wait is well worth it. For just a handful of change, you'll be able to sink your teeth into their famous cookies that ooze flavour and are fresh out of the oven every day. Secret tip – the hot/cold combo of their ice-cream sandwiches is a delight and is arguably better than just the straight cookies.

But hold up, you need to have some actual dinner first before you hit up dessert. Westwood has two of the best for you with In N' Out and Falafel King. Like the East Coast burger chain equivalent of Shake Shack, West Coast In N' Out has achieved cult-like status in its beloved home region. Pro tip - there's more to the menu than meets the eye, so make sure you ask for your fries 'Animal Style' – you won't regret it! Craving some authentic Middle Eastern cuisine, then look no further than Falafel King for all your hummus, kabob, pita and baba ghanoush needs!

You might not know much about sports, but you'll be swept up by the atmosphere on game day

The whole neighborhood people and even store fronts don their best blue and yellow merchandise. The most famous would be the UCLA Bruins Football team that regular attracts unfathomable crowds of over 70,000 screaming fans. But UCLA's sporting prowess doesn't stop there – UCLA alumni have won 251 medals including 126 gold at the Summer Olympic Games since 1920. Be sure to visit the UCLA Bruins website for match schedules for a whole range of sports. Pro tip – try and attend any match against arch-rivals USC Trojans – the ambiance will be electric!

You saved so much on your dorm-style accommodation

And as far as the UCLA students you shared the apartment block with, it was a dorm. But now put those savings to good use and splash out on a movie at Fox Theater. Noted for its 170-foot white Spanish Revival tower that sits atop, this Art Deco cinema has been a favourite for generations of moviegoers. Film buffs and Hollywood fanatics alike treat this venue as some sort of cultural Mecca and with the list of films premiering here over the years, it's not hard to see why. Mission: Impossible, Batman, the Harry Potter Franchise, Independence Day and The Terminator all made their worldwide debuts right here at this Westwood cinema. Check the website for tickets to the latest releases!
